Choquequirao Trek – Machu Picchu 8 Days

Choquequirao Trek to Machu Picchu 8 days, this is one of the many trails that cross the fantastic Andes mountain range. As such, it was featured in travel magazines and is being considered one of the top ten treks in the world for its biodiversity and wildlife. Most of the trail goes through the Andes and then touches the jungle where we will see local fruit plantations.

On this trip we offer a selective and exclusive service. Our staff members are trained and ready for all activities to make your trip as pleasant as possible.

This is one of the luxuries we have to offer, expert guides, qualified as such by our clients. This expedition will take you to two of the most important archaeological sites in the Cusco area: CHOQUEQUIRAO and MACHU PICCHU.

Both cities were considered villages of nobles and priestesses, and you will have the opportunity to learn about the legends and treasures that they left through time in these majestic mountains. These towns mark the beginning and the end of the Inca society.

At 5 a.m. we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and travel in our private van which will take us to the city of San Pedro of Cachora (2800m), trip of approximately 3 hours, where we will have free time to have breakfast. Here we meet the rest of our travel team (cooks, horsemen and their horses). We begin our walk that will take us between 6 to 7 hours. On the way you can also see a great diversity of landscapes that belong to different climates, such as the snow peaks of Pedrayoc, during the walk your tour guide will give you a lot of information regarding the flora and fauna of this area. Finally we arrive at El Mirador Capulichayoc, from where we can observe the deepest canyon in the world that is known as the Apurimac and where the majestic river Apurimac flows. This is where we will have our first lunch and from where it is possible to observe the first views of Choquequirao. After lunch we will  descend for an average of 3 hours to CHIKISKA (1800m), where our camp will be established, we will spend the night surrounded by a majestic landscape near the Apurimac canyon.

After a good breakfast we will start our walk, the first part will be downhill for an average of 45 minutes until the crossing of the bridge known as Rosalina Beach, then we will start with the most difficult of the walk all uphill, during 4 to 5 hours until our lunch point Marampata (2950 masl), from this place we will have a very beautiful view of the canyon and the Apurimac river, after lunch we will have a walk of 1 hour more until we reach the Inca citadel of Choquequirao “Cuna de Oro”, which is located at 3033 meters above sea level, it is here where we will have our campsite with beautiful views of the Inca citadel and the entire Apurimac canyon. In the afternoon we can visit a bit of the agricultural sector and then we will have tea time and a delicious dinner, then go to rest and prepare for the next day.

This day we will explore and know the Inka citadel of Choquequirao, Your tour guide will explain about the history and importance of this archaeological site, which is also considered as a sister city of Machu Picchu, since there are several similarities. Choquequirao hangs 1500 meters above the Apurimac Canyon. Machu Picchu hangs over the Urubamba canyon. They are in the same latitude and is considered one of the main cities of the Inca age, Choquequirao with more than 8 hectares, where only a third has been discovered and where every day archaeologists find something more interesting. This day we will observe and know the three levels of the ruins found, where we can appreciate the urban sector, agricultural terraces and the religious sector of this Inca City. We will also have great options to appreciate the flight of the Condor, after the visit of Choquequirao we will return to our camp to have tea time and a delicious dinner.

After breakfast we will cross the mountain on which Choquequirao is located, then start descending to the next valley and again ascend to our campsite. Near the recently discovered archaeological site of Corihuayrachina, we will pass through the Pincha Unuyoq terraces, still largely covered by the thick Andean forest. Pincha Unuyoq served as an agricultural support center for Choquequirao, this day we will walk approximately 7 to 8 hours.

We got up early to visit Corihuayrachina, was discovered by an expedition in 1999. We will continue our ascent through the foliage until we reach the first step. Near the pass we will see the ancient Inca roads and one of the silver mines of the Inca. After having lunch near the summit (approximately 4000 m./14.500 ft) we will descend to “the garden” where we will see countless flowers under the cliffs and overhangs, this is one of the most beautiful places on this planet. Our camp will be in the town of Yanama.

After breakfast we will prepare to descend to the second step, the path will be peaceful and relaxed, with beautiful waterfalls, glaciers, until we reach the pass, where we will be surrounded by snow-capped mountains. We arrived at La Puerta, also called the pass (4,400 M), it feels as if we were on the top of the world. After crossing the pass, we descend to a large meadow next to a stream of water, finally we continue the walk until we reach the place of the camp, a small town known as La Playa.

On this day we will climb about 3 hours, through an original Inca trail to reach the first archaeological site of this trail, in this part of the mountain we will observe a lot of vegetation, flowers, shrubs, trees of high forest until we reach the archaeological zone of Llactapata, once here we will have a panoramic view of Machu Picchu with a chain of mountains, a totally different view to the traditional photos that we all know. After having a guided tour of Llactapata and having explored this archaeological complex, we have to make a descent of an average of 2 hours until we reach a hydroelectric plant where we will have the last lunch with our cook. After lunch we will continue our walk towards the town of Aguas Calientes, this walk lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes, during this tour we will pass through Mandor, also known for its botanical gardens that show beautiful, colorful flowers and many species of orchids, and if you have time you could also visit the Mandor waterfalls. Our arrival to the town of Machu Picchu will be at 5:00 PM average, place where we will spend the night in a comfortable hotel with private rooms, hot shower, cable TV and Wi-Fi. Around 7:00 PM, we will have dinner and last preparations for the most important day of our excursion, the visit to the sacred city of the Incas MACHUPICCHU !!!

This day finally we visit Machu picchu, after breakfast your guide will meet you by your hotel lobby and you go to the bus stop to board the bus, we will drive for about 30 minutes to reach the citadel of Machu Picchu we pass the control where you show your ticket and passport, you will have a private, guided tour, to visit the most important places in Machu Picchu such as the Main Plaza, the Sun Temple, the Sacred Sundial, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows and cemeteries, the tour will be for more than two hours, After the visit, you will have free time to visit Machu Picchu on your own (optional, climb the Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu mountain, this costs an additional $ 35 USD per person).
