Ausangate Trek PAT Service

Day 1: Cusco to Upis

Very early in the morning we leave Cusco city in a private transport, and drive along the Cusco – Puerto Maldonado road towards Tinki (3 800 m.a.s.l./ 12464ft). On the way we pass Urcos, where we can observe a beautiful lagoon with the same name.

We continue to Cattca, an agricultural and livestock community where we can appreciate the spectacular views of the region and finally cross Ocongate, capital of the district with the same name.

From this point we are only half an hour away from our destination. After approximately 4 hours by car, we arrive at Tinki, where we meet our muleteers and horses.

We begin our hike starting a slight climb through the puna (dry, high area with little vegetation) to then reach our lunch spot after a three hour hike. From here we already have beautiful views of the sacred peak of Ausangate (6 372 m.a.s.l./ 20900ft). After lunch, we continue walking for another hour and a half to reach our campsite at Upis (4 400 m.a.s.l./ 14432ft).

From this point, we can appreciate the fabulous views of all the snow-capped peaks in the area. We will camp and have dinner directly in front of Ausangate.

Day 2: Upis to Ausangatecocha

After breakfast, we continue our hike ascending for two hours to reach the pass of La Arapa (4 850 m.a.s.l. / 15 908ft). We then descend to our lunch spot, crossing an area of hawks, viscachas and Andean rodents. This area also has three beautiful lakes with shades of red, green and turquoise (Pukacocha, HatunPukacocha and Qomerqocha) and spectacular views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks.

After lunch, we continue a long and slow ascent that will take us, after approximately two hours, to the second mountain pass, the Abra de Apuchata (4 900 m.a.s.l. / 16 072ft). From here we descend for another half hour to our campsite at Ausangatecocha (4,440 m.a.s.l. / 14,563ft).

Day 3: Ausangateqocha to Q’ampa. third day of the exciting Ausangate trek !

Today we leave early to climb two hours to the third mountain pass, the Abra de Palomani (5 200 m.a.s.l. / 17056ft). This is the highest part of the entire trek, from which we descend for 2 more hours through an area of llamas, alpacas and vizcachas to reach Pampacancha (4 050m.a.s.l.).

From here we follow a trail uphill until it takes us to our campsite at Q’ampa (4 300m.a.s.l./ 14 104ft). Along this easy 3-hour climb, we may have the opportunity to spot llamas, alpacas, and even pumas. We will have dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 4: Q’ampa to Pacchanta

We climb for 2 hours until we reach the Q’ampa pass (5,000 m.a.s.l./16,404ft), where we will be able to observe the Andean deer. From here we descend towards the Qomerqocha lagoon to finally reach Pacchanta (4 100 m.a.s.l./13 448ft) after approximately five hours of walking. Pacchanta is a small community with attractive hot springs where we can enjoy a relaxing dip. We will camp and spend the night in this place.

Day 5 Pacchanta to Tinki, the last day of the Ausangate trek.

We leave Pacchanta and start our way back to Tinki, which will take approximately 2 hours. Once in Tinki, we will board a private transport that will take us back to the city of Cusco, where we estimate to arrive after sunset.

The Ausangate trek, nowadays is one of the most requested trips by national and foreign visitors. It is undoubtedly a wonderful adventure after tours such as: Salkantay to Machu Picchu, Inca Trail Machu Picchu, Inca Jungle and Lares Machu Picchu.

Difficulty

Challenging: due to the altitude we recommend a period of at least 3 days for acclimatization in Cusco or in a place over 3 000 m.a.s.l. / 9 840ft.

Prices per person depend on the size of the group, the larger the group the lower the price per person.

Departures are daily and are available throughout the year, although due to weather conditions, the recommended period for this trek is from April to November.

All departure dates of the private service are adapted to your request.

DAY 1: CUSCO – “ABRA MALAGA” – SANTA MARIA (BIKING AND RAFTING)

We’ll pick you up from your hotel lobby at 06:00 a.m in our private van and travel for an average of four hours to reach Carrizales or San Luis where we will start our adventure, in the way we’ll pass “Abra Malaga” which is at 4,300 masl. We will bike downhill an average of three hours to Santa Maria where we will have lunch. Along the way, we will see the typical vegetation of a cloud forest appreciating coffee plantations and coca leaves, to reach the village of Santa Maria where we’re going to spend the night in a lodging house.

This day in the afternoon, we’ll have the option of boating (rafting) for 1 hour and a half Vilcanota River (Class III, IV).

DÍA 2: SANTA MARIA – BAÑOS TERMALES – SANTA TERESA

After a rich breakfast, at 06:30 a.m approx. we will be ready for the first day of trek towards Santa Teresa. The first two hours of our tour will be on the ascent, in the way, we will have several stops to learn more of the rich flora and fauna of the area in which we will, one will be in a family where we will relax for about 20 minutes, here we can also stock up on water and some delicious tropical fruits in the area, later we’ll cross a section of the Inca trail that once connected the Sacred City of Machu Picchu with the city of Vilcabamba, here our tour guide will explain us a little more about the history of the Incas and the communication system they had in those days, at this point, we also have some of the most breathtaking views across the canyon Huancarccasa then descend to the village where we’re gonna stop for lunch Quellomayo and after a delicious lunch and a rest in the hammocks of our restaurant, we will continue with the last 02 hours of walk to the thermal baths of Cocalmayo where we will have a good time to enjoy this very special place, after we will go to thermal baths: our final destination the village of Santa Teresa where we will spend our second night in a basic accommodation.

DAY 3: SANTA TERESA – “AGUAS CALIENTES” (ZIP LINE)

This morning, we’ll have the option to do Canopy or Zip Line (monkey tail).

For after breakfast, we’re gonna head towards the Old Santa Teresa where we’ll find another barrage to cross the same river Urubamba, then we’ll hike for 2 hours, along the way, we will observe plantations of fruits such as banana, orange, avocado, mango and observe some waterfalls, finally we might see the mountain of Machu Picchu, then we’ll head to Hydroelectric where we will have lunch, after two hours we’ll walk along the railway line to the town of Machu Pichu.

DAY 4: MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

This day we visit Machu picchu again, after breakfast your guide will meet you by your hotel lobby and you go to the bus stop to board the bus, we will drive for about 30 minutes to reach the citadel of Machu Picchu we pass the control where you show your ticket and passport, you will have a private, guided tour, to visit the most important places in Machu Picchu such as the Main Plaza, the Sun Temple, the Sacred Sundial, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows and cemeteries, the tour will be for more than two hours, After the visit, you will have free time to visit Machu Picchu on your own (optional, climb the Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu mountain, this costs an additional $ 35 USD per person). You can also hike to the Sun Gate or the Inka Bridge, for these 02 places there are no additional payments.
At the appropriate time, we will take the bus and descend from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes usual train departure to Ollantaytambo is in the afternoon, followed by car two hours drive to your hotel in Cusco.

The Inca Jungle Trail tour is completely safe, you will always be with your guide or instructed by instructors. A lot of the time you are followed by a support van. The biggest worry you have is to keep your sunscreen and bug repellent topped up!

Each trek is assigned a difficulty level. This has been developed based on prior information of the trek and feedback from previous clients. The ratings in ascending order are as follows:

What do I need to bring to the Inca Jungle trek 4 Days?

Each trek is different and you will obviously modify your packing list for your own needs. The Inca Jungle Trail tour is different in the way that you stay in hotels along your trek. You can therefore bring extra things relevant to this as you will not have a weight limit like other treks. Do be mindful that you will have to carry your own pack during the hiking sections of the trip but during other activities they hall be safely stored in our van or other secure locations.

Essentials: Water bottle/s of 3 litres in total, waterproofs (jacket and pants), extra socks & underwear, bug repellent, sunscreen, extra layers and clothing i.e. jumper for subsequent days, sun hat / beanie, any medication you need including inhalers, extra lightweight shoes / flip flops, swimwear and towel, bags to put wet clothing, money, passport. Optional: Walking poles, battery pack, go pro, camera, sunglasses, phone, lip balm (UV rays here are some of the highest in the world), extra clothing, snacks (although we do provide you with this). If you are unsure whether you will need an item, just as us during briefing or on your inquiry form when booking.

Do I need money?

During the wet season the jungle environment especially descending from the mountains is prone to mudslides and heavy rain which makes this trip not as enjoyable as it could be. For this reason also during the wet season we no longer include the white water rafting in our trips due to the rain and its effects on the river and your safety.

Between April and November are strong moths to book in depending on what you want ; A positive for booking within a month closer to the wet season is that wildlife is easier to spot.Although the best time regarding weather for this trek is either May, June, July and August having temperatures exceeding 30°C.

What happens if I have a medical condition?

You know yourself better than anyone else if your medical condition will hinder your trip or not. It is imperative that you let us know however, especially if you intend to carry medications with you. We can advise on the best options if we are aware and also make special provisions if needed. Although if you do have an ongoing medical condition we highly urge you to seek council with your doctor before booking onto any trek.

What happens if I have dietary needs?

Not a problem , we can cater for you. Please, let us know at the time of booking so we can ensure tasty options for you!

How long do I need to become accustomed to altitude?

It is recommended that at least a couple of days in Cusco before starting any trek. Some struggle with the altitude more than others, if you find you are being affected by it, take time to relax and don’t exert yourself too much , take altitude sickness tablets, drink plenty of water. DAY 01: CUSCO – HUCHUY QOSQO

The departure from Cusco is at 09:00 a.m, we will travel by car 20 minutes to the archaeological complex of Sacsayhuaman, there we’ll begin our journey on horseback ride of three hours towards the Yanacocha Lake (3,800 masl or 12,543 ft.) where we will have lunch, in the afternoon, we will continue to Huchuy Qosqo two hours on horseback (Inca archaeological site), arriving at approximately 05:00 p.m.

DAY 02: HUCHUY QOSQO – CHINCHERO – CUSCO

After breakfast, we’ll visit the archaeological complex of Huchuy Qosqo, and then continue our ride for approximately 4 hours to Chinchero (Inca archaeological site), on the way, we’re gonna visit Piuray Lagoon, we’ll also have beautiful views of the Sacred Valley and the snow-capped mountains of Chicon and Veronica.

Finishing the tour in Chinchero, we’ll return to Cusco by car, arriving at  05:00 pm. approximately

CUSCO – PIURAY LAGOON – HUCHUYQOSQO – CUSCO

This excursion involves approximately 8 hours of walking (including rests, lunch and a tour of the archaeological complex), crossing ecological levels such as quechua, suni and puna, with their characteristic flora and fauna.
We leave the city of Cuzco early in the morning, taking the road north towards the Sacred Valley of the Inkas. On the way to the town of Chinchero, we can appreciate the extensive fields of crops, which have been cultivated since ancient times. We travel along one of the Banks of the Piuray lagoon, to the community of Tauca (3762 masl / 12343 ft), where our walk begins.
We follow a disused dirt track, with a gentle gradient, to the Pucajasa Mountain Pass (4393 masl / 14413 ft), where we will have a spectacular view of the Urubamba mountain range. This pass is about 200 meters long. We begin our descent and find sections of Inka trail, and we can also appreciate radical changes in the ecological levels.
We arrive at Huchuyqosqo (3688 masl / 12099 ft), where we enjoy our snack-lunch. After a short descent, we begin our tour of the archaeological complex, after which we will descend to the town of Lamay (2938 masl / 9639 ft). Here we will board our transport back to the city of Cuzco.

DAY 01: CUSCO – CACHORA – CAPULICHAYOQ – CHIKISCA.

At 5 a.m. we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and travel in our private van which will take us to the city of San Pedro of Cachora (2800m), trip of approximately 3 hours, where we will have free time to have breakfast. Here we meet the rest of our travel team (cooks, horsemen and their horses). We begin our walk that will take us between 6 to 7 hours. On the way you can also see a great diversity of landscapes that belong to different climates, such as the snow peaks of Pedrayoc, during the walk your tour guide will give you a lot of information regarding the flora and fauna of this area. Finally we arrive at El Mirador Capulichayoc, from where we can observe the deepest canyon in the world that is known as the Apurimac and where the majestic river Apurimac flows. This is where we will have our first lunch and from where it is possible to observe the first views of Choquequirao. After lunch we will  descend for an average of 3 hours to CHIKISKA (1800m), where our camp will be established, we will spend the night surrounded by a majestic landscape near the Apurimac canyon.

DAY 02: CHIKISCA – BEACH ROSALINA – MARAMPATA – CHOQUEQUIRAO.

DAY 03: GUIDED TOUR AND VISIT OF THE INCA CITADEL “CHOQUEQUIRAO”.

DAY 04: CHOQUEQUIRAO – CORIHUAYRACHINA.

After breakfast we will cross the mountain on which Choquequirao is located, then start descending to the next valley and again ascend to our campsite. Near the recently discovered archaeological site of Corihuayrachina, we will pass through the Pincha Unuyoq terraces, still largely covered by the thick Andean forest. DAY 05: CORIHUAYRACHINA – YANAMA.

DAY 06: YANAMA – CHALLHUAY – LA PLAYA.

After breakfast we will prepare to descend to the second step, the path will be peaceful and relaxed, with beautiful waterfalls, glaciers, until we reach the pass, where we will be surrounded by snow-capped mountains. We arrived at La Puerta, also called the pass (4,400 M), it feels as if we were on the top of the world. After crossing the pass, we descend to a large meadow next to a stream of water, finally we continue the walk until we reach the place of the camp, a small town known as La Playa.

DAY 07: THE BEACH / LA PLAYA – LLACTAPATA – AGUAS CALIENTES.

On this day we will climb about 3 hours, through an original Inca trail to reach the first archaeological site of this trail, in this part of the mountain we will observe a lot of vegetation, flowers, shrubs, trees of high forest until we reach the archaeological zone of Llactapata, once here we will have a panoramic view of Machu Picchu with a chain of mountains, a totally different view to the traditional photos that we all know. After having a guided tour of Llactapata and having explored this archaeological complex, we have to make a descent of an average of 2 hours until we reach a hydroelectric plant where we will have the last lunch with our cook.
