There will always be slower and faster walkers in your group but your guide will adjust his or her walking pace to make sure that everyone in your group is happy. The toughest part of the day is the\u00a0<strong>three-hour walk uphill<\/strong>\u00a0at the start, climbing rapidly from the Urubamba River to the Wi\u00f1ay Wayna ruins. The Short Inca Trail may not be suitable for those who suffer from vertigo.<\/p>\n<h2>What altitude does\u00a0it reach?<\/h2>\n<p>The Short Inca Trail\u00a0<strong>starts at 2,000 metres<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>ascends to 2,700 metres<\/strong>\u00a0at the Sun Gate, before descending to Machu Picchu which sits at an altitude of 2,400 metres. The total walking time on the first day is around\u00a0<strong>seven hours<\/strong>, split up into three main sections with lots of rest breaks. The transfer to the start point of the trail is by bus and train. The bus trip down from Machu Picchu to the train station and the journey back to Cusco in the Expeditioner train is included. In Cusco you will be transferred to your hotel. A\u00a0<strong>packed lunch<\/strong>\u00a0is provided for the hike. If you want other snacks during the trail, these can be bought in Cusco. Lunch on the second day is not included and you can buy this in a restaurant in Aguas Calientes.<\/p>\n<h2>When is the best time to go?<\/h2>\n<p>From April to October, it is usually warm and humid during the day (around 20-25\u00baC) and night time temperatures are around 15\u00baC. The majority of your luggage is left in your hotel in Cusco, and you will just need a\u00a0<strong>day pack<\/strong>\u00a0for the trail, to carry your packed lunch, water bottle and anything else you require.
